Use Laptop, PC as Wi-Fi Hotspot in Windows 7 and Windows 8

Most of the PC users have access to internet either through cables or dongles. And almost every  new Laptop and even PCs come with Inbuilt Wi-Fi support to access internet wirelessly, but still they don’t have WiFi Hotspot facility. What if you want to share the internet from your computer to other devices like Mobile Phones (smartphones) and Tablets. To share the internet connection we need Wi-Fi hotspot feature, even Android and other smartphones come with inbuilt Wi-Fi hotspot feature but our PC’s don’t have such inbuilt tools.

Use PC as Wi-Fi HotSpot, Share PC Internet with Mobile Phone
So, today we will learn how to use or share your PC internet connection with Mobile or any other Wi-Fi enabled device.

Method 1: Create Hostspot on Windows PC using Command Prompt

The first method is the easiest way to create WiFi Hotspot on your computer. This takes less time and doesn’t require any third party software. Follow these steps to know how to create WiFi Hotspot on Windows PC using command prompt.

Step 1: Click on Start  and type in cmd in the search.

Step 2: Right click on cmd.exe and click on Runs as Administrator.

Step 3: In the command prompt window, enter the following command:

netsh wlan set hostednetwork mode=allow ssid=WiFiname key=password 

in the above command replace WiFiname with any name that you would like to call your hotspot and replace password with any password. Now hit enter to execute the command.

Step 4: Now that you have created a WiFi hotspot on your PC, it’s time to start it. Enter following command to start your WiFi hotspot:

netsh wlan start hostednetwork

That’s it. Now search for available WiFi hotspot using your smartphone or tablet and select your newly created WiFi hotspot to use it. Enter password when asked for authentication.

Method 2: Create WiFi hotspot on Windows PC using Virtual Router

This method is based on a free computer application called as Virtual Router. Virtual Router is a free, open source software based router for PCs running Windows 8, Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2. Using Virtual Router, users can wirelessly share any internet connection (Wifi, LAN, Cable Modem, Dial-up, Cellular, etc.) with any Wifi device (Laptop, Smart Phone, iPod Touch, iPhone, Android Phone, Zune, Netbook, wireless printer, etc.) These devices connect to Virtual Router just like any other access point, and the connection is completely secured using WPA2 (the most secure wireless encryption.)

Requirements:

  • A Laptop or PC running on Windows 7 OS or Windows 8
  • A Wi-Fi device (Only if your Laptop/PC don’t have inbuilt Wi-Fi device)

Follow Below steps to create Wi-Fi hotspot using your PC/Laptop.

  1. Download and Install Virtual Router on your PC
  2. Open Virtual Router by double-click on it
  3. Give SSID (any random name for your WiFi Hotspot)
  4. Use WAP 2 for more security
  5. Enter Password of at least 8 letters
  6. Click on Start Virtual Router

Now Turn on Wi-Fi on your device and search for available connections, if everything was right then your device will detect your PC as WiFi hotspot just select and enjoy. If it asks for the password, provide the one you have entered in #Step 5.

    it’s awesome but i still have some problem…
    Having installed VR, when i started it and connected my android phone to it, it got connected but the software is unable to find the host name and IP address of my device. Please help, brother…

    Looks like that the android devices have a problem with this programm..
    maybe an updατe will be better than messing with everyones mind and computer..
