Use Laptop, PC as Wi-Fi Hotspot in Windows 7 and Windows 8

Most of the PC users have access to internet either through cables or dongles. And almost every  new Laptop and even PC’s come with Inbuilt Wi-Fi support to access internet wirelessly, but still they don’t have WiFi Hotspot facility. What if you want to share the internet from your computer to other devices like Mobile Phones (smartphones) and Tablets. To share the internet connection we need Wi-Fi hotspot feature, even Android and other smartphones come with inbuilt Wi-Fi hotspot feature but our PC’s don’t have such inbuilt tools.

So, today we will learn how to use or share your PC internet connection with Mobile or any other Wi-Fi enabled device.This method is based on a free computer application called as Virtual Router.About Virtual Router:

Virtual Router is a free, open source software based router for PCs running Windows 8, Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2. Using Virtual Router, users can wirelessly share any internet connection (Wifi, LAN, Cable Modem, Dial-up, Cellular, etc.) with any Wifi device (Laptop, Smart Phone, iPod Touch, iPhone, Android Phone, Zune, Netbook, wireless printer, etc.) These devices connect to Virtual Router just like any other access point, and the connection is completely secured using WPA2 (the most secure wireless encryption.)


  • A Laptop or PC running on Windows 7 OS or Windows 8
  • A Wi-Fi device (Only if your Laptop/PC don’t have inbuilt Wi-Fi device)

Follow Below steps to create Wi-Fi hotspot using your PC/Laptop.

  1. Download and Install Virtual Router
  2. Open Virtual Router by double click on it
  3. Give SSID (any random name)
  4. Use WAP 2 for more security
  5. Give Password of at least 8 letters
  6. Now you’re ready to go.

Now Turn on Wi-Fi in your device and search for available connections, if everything was right then your device will detect your PC as WiFi hotspot just select and Enjoy and if it ask for the password provide the one you entered in #Step 5.

    Having installed VR, when i started it and connected my android phone to it, it got connected but the software is unable to find the host name and IP address of my device. Please help, brother…

    Looks like that the android devices have a problem with this programm..
    maybe an updατe will be better than messing with everyones mind and computer..
