Use Laptop, PC as Wi-Fi Hotspot in Windows 10, 7, 8: Most of the PC users have access to the internet either through cables or dongles. And almost every new Laptop and even PCs come with Inbuilt Wi-Fi support to access the internet wirelessly, but still they don’t have WiFi Hotspot facility.
What if you want to share the internet from your computer to other devices like Mobile Phones (smartphones) and Tablets? To share the internet connection we need Wi-Fi hotspot in our PC, even Android and other smartphones come with inbuilt Wi-Fi hotspot feature but our PC’s don’t have such inbuilt tools.
Method 1: Create Hotspot in Windows PC using Command Prompt
The first method is the easiest way to create WiFi Hotspot on your computer. This takes less time and doesn’t require any third-party software. Follow these steps to know how to create WiFi Hotspot on Windows PC using command prompt.
Step 1: Click on Start and type in cmd in the search.
Step 2: Right click on cmd.exe and click on Runs as Administrator.
Step 3: In the command prompt window, enter the following command:
netsh wlan set hostednetwork mode=allow ssid=WiFiname key=password
In the above command replace WiFiname with any name that you would like to call your hotspot as and replace password with any password. Now hit enter to execute the command.
Step 4: Now that you have created a WiFi hotspot on your PC, it’s time to start it. Enter the following command to start your WiFi hotspot:
netsh wlan start hostednetwork
That’s it. Now search for available WiFi hotspot using your smartphone or tablet and select your newly created WiFi hotspot to use it. Enter password when asked for authentication.
If you can see your newly created hotspot on your mobile or tablet, but are unable to connect to the internet or access any web page then you need to share your internet connection with your newly created WiFi hotspot. To do this, follow these steps.
Go to Control Panel and open Network and sharing. Next, click on Change adapter settings. Right-click on your internet connection and select properties from the option.
Next, click on sharing tab and from the drop-down menu, select your newly created WiFi hotspot to share the internet connection.
Now restart your WiFi hotspot using the same command which is “netsh wlan start hostednetwork” and try to connect to it from your mobile or any other WiFi-compatible device.
Tip: Create and Use .bat File to Start WiFi hotspot
Now you may don’t want to open the command prompt and enter the command every time to start the WiFi hotspot in your Windows PC. What we can do here is create a batch file with predefined commands to start your hosted network or WiFi hotspot and save it in your PC or desktop.
Whenever, you want to start the WiFi hotspot, all you have to do is run the batch file and your WiFi hotspot will be started. Here is how to do it.
1. Open Notepad in your Windows PC.
2. Enter this command:
Netsh wlan start hostednetwork
3. Now save it as Startwifi.bat. Make sure that you select save as type as all and not .txt.
4. Once the bat file has been created, right-click on it and Create a shortcut.
5. Move that shortcut to the desktop.
6. Now right-click on the Shortcut and click on Properties.
7. Click on Advanced and check Run as Administrator.
This step is only required if you don’t want to Run the .bat file as Administrator by right-clicking on it and selecting Run as Administrator each time you restart your WiFi hotspot in PC.
Now that you have created WiFi hotspot and created a .bat file for it, if you want to restart the WiFi hotspot, simply double-click on the file and your hosted WiFi network will be started.
WiFi Trouble Shooting Tips:
The hosted network couldn't be started. The wireless local area network interface is powered down and doesn't support the requested operation.
This error message is quite common when you try to start the hosted network or WiFi hotspot.
If you look at the message, it is basically saying that the resources are not in a position to start the WiFi hotspot.
Most of the time the problem is your disabled Wireless adapter. To enable it, either press the WiFi key in your laptop or go to control panel > Network and Sharing > Change adapter settings > right-click on your WiFi connection and enable it.
If you are on Windows 10, from the bottom right corner click on Internet access and click on Wi-Fi, under network settings section to enable it.
Method 2: Create WiFi hotspot in Windows 10 PC using Virtual Router
This method is based on a free computer application called as Virtual Router. Virtual Router is a free, open source software based router for PCs running Windows 8, Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2. Using Virtual Router, users can wirelessly share any internet connection (Wifi, LAN, Cable Modem, Dial-up, Cellular, etc.) with any Wifi device (Laptop, Smart Phone, iPod Touch, iPhone, Android Phone, Zune, Netbook, wireless printer, etc.) These devices connect to Virtual Router just like any other access point, and the connection is completely secured using WPA2 (the most secure wireless encryption.)
